Who needs a mentor? Everyone!

Well, at least I do and most of the people I know have needed a mentor at some point in their lives. I certainly wouldn’t be able to do all the things I have done without some great guidance and mentorship. With the pending change in leadership, mentorship is more important now than ever. The next generation of leaders need mentors in leadership and a way to learn more from their predecessors. In my research, Preparing the Path to Leadership, survey participants identified mentorship as critical to their leadership success.
The Next Generation Leadership Forum through Craigslist Foundation is exploring mentorship as one of the tools nonprofits can use to prepare the next generation of leaders. Looking to organizations like VolunteerMatch and iMentor will be incredibly useful for their work and others. Mentoring now crosses country lines as well - you could have a mentor from a different city, state, or even country! I appreciated the opportunity voice my opinions and perspectives of the nonprofit sector during each of the IS conference sessions, however as I reflect back on these voice opportunities I am questioning if I utilized my voice in the most effective matter.
Several of the sessions I attended had so many people raising their hands that not everyone could ask their questions which caused my anxiety level to rise to the point that when the session was over I immediately went up to the speaker and blurted out what I wanted to say. This provided for some awkwardness between the speaker and I because of the intensity of the passion in which I speak about sector issues. As I discussed this passion and intensity with other next gen conference attendees, some of us wondered if the seasoned leaders were ready for what we had to say. Read More

I have been busy with work lately, not sleep under my desk busy, but busy enough where I don’t have a lot of spare time to think about what to eat at home. It is not like when I have lots of spare time I am a wonderful chef who makes home cooked meals for the neighborhood but I can get a protein, vegetable, and a starch on the table pretty consistently. For the first three weeks of my new job my husband has been handling almost all of the home duties and when it comes to food that means we had eaten a wide variety of fast food for three weeks straight. I was starting to feel like the guy from Supersize Me, so I finally ventured to the grocery store. Read More
